Part-time franchise opportunities for UK employees: named brands and tax checks

Named UK part-time franchises such as Ovenclean and Greensleeves, plus contract, HMRC tax and hours checks before you sign up, and what brands do not publish.

What to take away

  • Your employment contract, not the franchisor, decides whether you can run a franchise alongside a job.
  • HMRC taxes franchise profit through Self Assessment, separately from PAYE on your salary.
  • Named part-time models include Ovenclean, Greensleeves Lawn Care, Rosemary Bookkeeping, ChipsAway and Barking Mad.
  • Most part-time franchise opportunities UK-wide are weekend or evening models, so the diary matters more than the brand.
  • Count the hours you can hold for a year before you compare fees.

Your employment contract decides the legal room you have

Many UK contracts include an outside-work clause. Some require written consent, while others ban anything that competes with the employer's customers.

Contract checks before you commit

Does the contract demand your full attention?

Yes

No

Two checks matter first. Does the contract ask for your full attention during employment? Could the franchise sell to your employer's clients?

The Working Time Regulations 1998 cap average weekly working time at 48 hours unless you sign an opt-out. A weekend franchise on top of a long week is a fatigue risk as much as a legal one.

Keep written evidence of what your employer agreed. A short confirming email is worth more than a verbal nod.

Planning a franchise around your existing job runs through the hours first, not the brand you like.

How HMRC treats a second income

Franchise profit is taxable trade income, even when you also pay tax through PAYE on a salary. GOV.UK's guide to setting up a business covers registration, the sole trader route and record keeping.

HMRC's £1,000 trading allowance means small gross self-employed income usually needs no declaration. A trading franchise rarely stays below that line for long.

Once profit passes it, register for Self Assessment with HMRC and file a return each year.

Keep a separate bank account and a running record of stock and travel costs from day one.

VAT runs on its own clock. Watch rolling 12-month turnover against the threshold on GOV.UK's VAT registration page, because one strong quarter can push you over.

The VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of rolling 12-month turnover at the time of writing. That figure and the £1,000 trading allowance were checked on GOV.UK in 2026.

Named part-time franchise models to check

These are real UK franchises publicly advertised as flexible or owner-operated. Check the current franchise agreement and any disclosure pack before you compare fees.

Typical structures are a one-off fee plus either a percentage of turnover or a fixed monthly management fee.

Ovenclean and Ovenu both sell oven cleaning rounds. Ovenu is another named option if you want a single-service van model.

Weekend models squeeze demand into short windows. A missed Saturday is hard to make up later, so ask what the busiest part-time operator in the network actually works.

Costs and hours before you sign

  1. List the hours you can hold every week for a year, holidays included.
  2. Ask for the minimum operator hours in the agreement, not the estimate in the advert.
  3. Put the initial fee, royalty and stock costs into one monthly figure, with your salary surplus as the ceiling.
  4. Run one month at that pace before you commit to anything longer.

Worked monthly example, illustrative figures only. A franchise fee of £15,000 over a five-year agreement gives £250 a month. Royalty at 8 per cent of £2,000 turnover is £160. Stock and consumables £250, insurance £40. Total £700 against a spare £600 from salary, so the month runs £100 short until turnover rises.

Give the plan a stop rule. If month three shows the diary cannot hold the hours, stop before the rest of the fee falls due.

Royalties take a share of turnover whether or not the week went well.

Check whether the agreement requires public liability cover and whether your household policy excludes business use of a vehicle.

Before signing, work through the questions to ask a franchisor before signing, particularly minimum hours and royalty base.

Common questions

Does my employer have to agree to me running a franchise?

Not by law, but your contract may require consent. Breaching an outside-work or exclusivity clause can cost you the job.

Do I need to register for Self Assessment if I keep my job?

Yes, once gross self-employed income passes the £1,000 trading allowance, even though salary tax stays with PAYE. Registration and filing sit outside payroll.

How many hours a week does a part-time franchise need?

It depends on the model. Ovenclean and Greensleeves usually need bookings in fixed windows, and bookkeeping work often fits evenings. Weekly hours vary widely between brands.

Can I run a franchise and stay employed full time?

Yes, if the contract allows it and your average working week stays within the 48-hour limit. Review the arrangement each quarter.
