Strategy

Part of Planning a franchise in England around the owner's job, not the brand

Comparing three franchise discovery channels on evidence, disclosure and follow-up

Compare three UK franchise discovery channels using first-party records, consistent criteria and checks for evidence, disclosure and follow-up quality.

A franchise opportunities channel strategy should use each route for the job it can actually do. This comparison covers the British Franchise Association directory, Franchise Direct UK and the International Franchise Show. All three can expose a buyer to opportunities, but none establishes that a territory is viable or an agreement is suitable.

The review is desk research based on first-party pages accessed on 5 September 2026. No listing was purchased, no enquiry was submitted and no event was attended. The channels are compared on search control, handover to the franchisor, evidence retained and the main gap a buyer must close.

What to take away

  • Each franchise discovery channel answers a different question, so match the route to the evidence you still need.
  • The BFA directory filters by membership, which is not proof of personal or commercial fit.
  • Franchise Direct UK uses a pay-per-lead model, so inclusion is not an independent recommendation.
  • The International Franchise Show offers direct questioning, but exhibitors are a self-selected group.
  • Use two channels to reduce blind spots, not to count repeated brand appearances as confirmation.

BFA franchisor directory

The association's franchisor directory at thebfa.org/franchisors presents its member brands in a searchable list. It exposes a keyword search box and a member-only filter. This gives a buyer an association-defined starting pool and a route to individual brand records.

BFA directory verification steps

  • Record member status and date
  • Save page viewed and entity
  • Verify company and network
  • Verify territory and finances
  • Verify agreement terms

Membership is the distinguishing filter, not proof of personal or commercial fit. The BFA Code of Ethics for Franchising 2024 describes industry self-regulation for members. A buyer should record the member status and date, then still verify the company, network, territory, finances and agreement.

A good BFA record should name the franchisor entity, its membership status and date, the sector and the minimum investment band. Save the page viewed and the exact entity named before leaving the directory.

Franchise Direct UK

Franchise Direct's own description of its service says users can search aggregated franchise information by industry, investment level or location. For example, a buyer can filter by industry, such as food and drink, or by investment level band.

It also says a request for information sends contact details to the franchisor and describes a pay-per-lead advertising offer for brands. The pay-per-lead offer is described on Franchise Direct UK's own advertising page, not inside individual listings.

Franchise Direct UK: use vs caution

Use

Filters
Build longlist

Gap remains

Caution

Filters
Not recommendation
Lead model
Commercial boundary
Contact details
Check recipient
Listing claims
Not verified

Check fees and history

Those filters can help a buyer create an initial longlist. The commercial lead model is an important boundary: inclusion and visibility should not be treated as an independent recommendation. Before submitting details, check which business will receive them and retain the listing claims as dated sales material.

The main gap is verification. A directory summary rarely contains everything needed to understand continuing fees, owner workload, network history or contract restrictions.

International Franchise Show

The organiser's visitor information currently gives opening times for 16 and 17 April 2027 at ExCeL London. The exhibitor list is grouped by sector, with categories such as food and drink and health and beauty.

A physical event lets a buyer ask several franchisors the same question in a short period and observe how clearly each team describes its model.

Conversation is not a durable source by itself. Write down the representative, legal entity, claim, requested follow-up and time of the discussion. Do not sign or pay because an event deadline creates pressure. The event organiser's page describes access and timing; it does not endorse every commercial claim made at a stand.

The obvious gap is selection. Attendance excludes people who cannot travel at those times, and exhibitors form a self-selected group. It cannot represent all UK opportunities.

Apply one evidence rule across channels

The Committee of Advertising Practice page on business-opportunity marketing requires clear work and financial commitment details and evidence for earnings claims, and that is the practical rule for every channel. Its advice concerns UK non-broadcast advertising and is not legal advice.

Whichever channel starts the enquiry, ask for the full source behind workload, investment and earnings statements. Keep one scorecard for all opportunities: operating role, territory, initial and continuing cash, network evidence, agreement status and unanswered questions. "

Repetition across a directory, event and franchisor page may reflect the same marketing campaign. It is not three independent confirmations.

Before you act

  • Record the BFA member status and date viewed.
  • Check which business receives your contact details before submitting.
  • Write down the representative, legal entity, claim and follow-up at events.
  • Ask for the full source behind workload, investment and earnings statements.
  • Keep one scorecard for all opportunities with unanswered questions.

Common questions

What does BFA membership actually confirm for a franchise buyer?

BFA membership confirms the brand is in the association's directory and follows its Code of Ethics for Franchising 2024. It does not prove personal or commercial fit. Buyers must still verify the company, network, territory, finances and agreement independently.

How does Franchise Direct UK make money from franchise enquiries?

Franchise Direct UK describes a pay-per-lead advertising offer for brands. When a user requests information, their contact details are sent to the franchisor. This commercial model means inclusion and visibility should not be treated as an independent recommendation.

Why is the International Franchise Show not a complete source of opportunities?

The show only includes exhibitors who choose to attend, and it excludes people who cannot travel to ExCeL London on 16 and 17 April 2027. It cannot represent all UK opportunities, and conversation alone is not a durable source.
